  • On Sunday 7 December at The Liberal Synagogue, St Johns Wood, Karen Armstrong spoke about 'The Core of Religion' describing many of her Twelve Steps to Compassion
  • Our series of joint meetings with IARF(the International Association for Religious Freedom) at the Central Mosque in Regent's Park began on 7 December, with speakers from various faiths on the subject of 'Into the Heart of the World'. Mr Omar Sedekki and Sheikh Fawzi were excellent hosts at London Central Mosque. As the session began, Mr. Sedekki led a short tour of the Mosque. Our thanks to David Horner from Religions for Peace and a volunteer from Brahma Kumaris for taking registrations. As our session began, we were greeted by the Senior Imam, Sheikh Khanlifa Ezzat.
    Rev. Feargus O'Connor introduced the first panelist, Imam Shahid Hussain. His words were followed by a break for mid-day prayer followed during which many of us joined prayers downstairs under the great dome of the Mosque. On return, the Great Compassion, "mahakaruna" was the theme of the lecture by Rev Dr. Marcus Braybrooke, Rabbi Jackie Tabick told us that the Jewish Faith is more about practice than belief. Then some lively discussion, a peace greeting, and a break for tea.
    Jehangir Sarosh, Director of British Religions for Peace, chaired the second panel which was opened by Rev Christopher Hudson MBE. He spoke of his work in peace-making in Northern Ireland, pointing out that understanding was as important as forgiveness. Professor Kamran Mofid called for a "value led, people - nature centered economics ..." (texts are available) As the event closed, British Chapter IARF, held a brief meeting in the cafeteria downstairs. Then we walked to the lecture by Karen Armstrong that evening at the nearby Liberal Synagogue.
    The next meeting will be on 1 February, also at the mosque, when the subject will be 'Healing the World - Oneness and Compassion'....... Read more
  • Mitzvah Day, Interfaith Week and the Muslim-Jewish twinning programme

    Thanks to the help of the Al-Nisa society, the Leo Baeck College and the hospitality provided by North West Surrey Synagogue in Weybridge, a group of Muslim and Jewish women met together for tea and discussion as part of Mitzvah Day, Interfaith Week and the world wide Muslim-Jewish twinning programme spearheaded by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding.. Participants were asked to bring a text from their own tradition of women that had inspired them. The range was enormous, from Deborah, the prophetess to Aisha, one of the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
