FRANCIS YOUNGHUSBAND: EXPLORER AND MYSTIC

Wednesday 5 June
Pulteney Room, Manvers Street Baptist Church, BATH BA1 1JW
7.30pm to 9pm
Bath Interfaith Group is holding a special meeting to mark the 150th anniversary of Sir Francis Younghusband, Founder of the World Congress of Faiths, who spent much of his childhood in Bath and was educated at Clifton College in Bristol.
A talk about Younghusband's life will be given by Rev Dr Marcus Braybrooke, who is President of the World Congress of Faiths. Marcus is a former Vicar of Swainswick and Minister of Christ Church, Julian Road. His wife Mary was a magistrate and social worker.
Francis Younghusband, was a remarkable character. He was an explorer; served in the army; was the first Europeans to cross the Gobi desert; explored dangerous mountain passes in the Himalayas; led a controversial military mission to Tibet; and was a journalist and author.
Younghusband was also a spiritual explorer. His mystical experiences and friendships with people of different faiths and races convinced him that there is truth in all religions. This led him to found the World Congress of Faiths in 1936, as a fellowship for people of different faiths. He was convinced that the ethical teaching of the worlds' religions was the only basis for lasting peace.
The evening will also mark the launch of Marcus Braybrooke's new book Widening Vision: The World Congress of Faiths and the Growing Interfaith Movement (available from www.lulu.com)
