Following a proposal by King Abdullah of Jordan, the United Nations General Assembly has designated the First Week in February as a time to promote World Interfaith Harmony.
At a Peace Garden in Southern England, are these words "FROM HATE TO LOVE FROM WAR TO PEACE" To end the cycle of hate and anger, we need to work at "Forgiveness, Compassion, and Oneness". This is the theme of this free event in London.
In addition to governmental representatives, all can play a role in helping to heal the major problems of the world. This event brings together representatives of six major religions and also four World Interfaith Organisations. The common theme is "Healing the World". In the words of M.L. King, Jr, each of us knows "I cannot afford the luxury of hate."
We are all on the Great Ship EARTH. And as the EARTH is torn by wars and rage, we know the wisdom of other words of King, "Either we shall live together as brothers or we shall perish together as fools."
In our families, through taking responsibility for our thoughts, words, and deeds, we seek win-win strategies for those involved, through willingness to compromise, share and avoid harm. But in community and society level, we often ignore the win-win strategies. Interfaith Harmony is the tuning in to one another so that all have a chance to be WINNERS.
There is a tendency to adopt a position based on whether we are in a win-position or a loss-position.
For example, if we are poor then we might believe poverty can predominantly alleviated by taking from the rich, if we are benefiting from material progress then we might believe a compromised environment can be the inevitable result, and if we are in a dominant position in society then we might believe the selfish nature of humankind can be inconsistent with societal well-being.
Can we learn to treat individuals in communities and society as if they are our family members? Can Individuals and Religions cooperate with one another and with Governments, to achieve a win-win approach where everybody benefits?
"We all seek our separate peace, but we have to make peace together."
After a brief tour led by Omar Saddique of the Mosque,
Rev Dr. Alan Race will introduce the panellists from the Abrahamic Traditions:
Rabbi Jackie Tabick, Chair of the World Congress of Faiths, then Rev. Peter Owen Jones, famous for his BBC programme, "Around the World in 80 Faiths" and Imam Abduljalil Sajid, Chairman Muslim Council for Religious and Racial Harmony UK & President Religions for Peace UK.
Questions from those attending will be invited.
There will be breaks both for tea and for Moslem Prayer. Those who wish may take off their shoes and enter the Mosque to observe or to pray.
The second panel will be from the Dharmic Traditions of India and East Asia.
Yann Lovelock (Buddhist) will chair with the presenters, Ajit Singh MBE (Sikh) and Kiran Bali MBE (Hindu), CEO of United Religions Initiative, UK. Yann Lovelock is the author of a significant article on the Dharmic traditions. A summary will be available at the conference. It may also be found on David Horner of Religions for Peace will give the closing thanks at the end of the day.
Dr. Richard Boeke, Chair of
the British Chapter of the International Association for Religious Freedom www.IARF.net is coordinator of the conference. All who wish to attend are urged to register with Tony Reese admin@worldfaiths.org or with David Horner dvd.horner@googlemail.com
