Florida Interfaith Conference

            International Seminar, Patiala, India

The World Congress of Faiths co-sponsored an International Seminar with the Punjabi University at the University Campus, Patiala, on 29th and 30th January 2002.  At the Valedictory Session those gathered adopted:

Declaration on Ecology and Spirituality

WE REALIZE:

Humankind is facing an unprecedented ecological crisis that is threatening the very existence of all life on this planet.

The environmental  concerns, so forcefully expressed at the 1992 Rio Earth summit, are now being discussed as a matter of urgency by religions of the world, in ways which focus on the sacredness in plant, animal and human life-forms.

WE REITERATE:

“We are interdependent.  Each of us depends on the well-being of the whole, and so we have respect for the community of living beings, for people, animals, and plants, and for the preservation of the Earth, the air, water and soul,”  as stressed in the Declaration adopted at the Parliament of the World’s Religions at Chicago in 1993.

WE BELIEVE:

The pulsating presence of the Holy is found both in nature and humanity.  This has been envisioned by many of the prophets and founding revelations of the religions.  In particular, we recall how Guru Nanak, the first spiritual preceptor of the Sikhs, spoke of the air as Guru, of water as Father and of earth as the great Mother.  This is a sublime message that informs the entire Sikh Scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, which contains hymns of holy men coming from Hindu as well as Muslim traditions apart from those of the Sikh Gurus.

THEREFORE:

As we are approaching in 2004 the 400th anniversary of that divine moment in the flux of time when the fifth Prophet of Sikh religion compiled the Sikh Scripture, bequeathing it to humanity as its eternal guide.

*          We call upon the peoples of the world to celebrate 2004 as the Year of Ecology and Spirituality.

*          We call upon the United Nations to declare 2004 as the UNESCO-sponsored Year of Ecology and Spirituality.

*          We call upon the World Parliament of Religions and all other international interfaith organizations to dedicate their programmes for 2004 to Ecology and Spirituality.
